2022 Massachusetts Lawyer Well-Being Survey (Now Closed)

This article is for informational purposes only. It is not intended to be used in place of professional advice, treatment, or care in any way. Lawyers, law students, judges, and other legal professionals in Massachusetts can find more on scheduling a Free & Confidential appointment with a licensed clinician here.

We thank the Massachusetts lawyers who participated in this important well-being survey. We look forward to sharing results from this work.

This post will remain published for background informational purposes.

In 2017, the National Task Force on Lawyer Well-Being published The Path to Lawyer Well-Being: Practical Recommendations for Positive Change that detailed lawyers’ chronic stress, high rates of depression, and substance use and made recommendations for change. The Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being has sought to understand the well-being among Massachusetts lawyers specifically and brought Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, a non-profit organization focused on providing services to lawyers and NORC, a non-profit research organization based in Chicago, together to sponsor and conduct an independent assessment of the well-being of Massachusetts attorneys.

The survey has been distributed by the Board of Bar Overseers to lawyers with licenses in Massachusetts, however, NORC is the only entity that will receive the results. Responses to this survey are voluntary and will be kept confidential. NORC, an independent research organization, will oversee data collection, and will store survey responses on its secure servers. NORC will not share any individual responses with Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers, the Board of Bar Overseers, Standing Committee on Lawyer Well-Being, or the Massachusetts Courts

Those who are currently, or were previously, licensed to practice law in Massachusetts are invited to participate. Submit your responses only once.

You can access the survey here. (Link removed.) We are hoping to get as many responses as possible to ensure the fullest understanding of the concerns of Massachusetts lawyers. NORC’s Institutional Review Board, a research ethics board, has approved this research. If you have any questions about the study or the survey, please contact the research team at MALawyerWellBeing@norc.org.

For questions about your rights as a participant in this study, please contact the NORC Institutional Review Board Administrator at 1-866-309-0542.
