LCL (Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers) will be hosting its Brink Dinner on September 21, 2023, at the Harvard Club in Boston. Founded by James Brink, and several Boston lawyers, LCL was created to help Massachusetts lawyers in need of recovery support. LCL’s mission is to promote well-being and resilience in the legal community, improve lives, nurture competence, and elevate the standing of the legal profession. Through this mission, LCL hopes to attract those in the legal community to receive the addiction and mental health recovery support they need. The Brink Dinner, which until the pandemic had been an annual event, highlights the important work of LCL and celebrates recovery from substance use and mental health challenges in the legal community.
We are excited to announce our speakers for this year’s event:
Kyleigh Leddy, author of The Perfect Other: A Memoir of My Sister, details her family’s struggles with mental illness and reflects on the shame and stigma ever present in a perfectionistic society. Ms. Leddy, honored in Forbes 30 Under 30, is a graduate of Boston College and recently earned her Master of Social Work degree in advanced clinical practice and public policy from Columbia University. Her life’s mission is to fight the stigma associated with mental illness.
And
Payal Salsburg, currently, Partner at Laredo & Smith, and formerly an attorney at Proskauer Rose, will share personal reflections in recovering from depression and anxiety after taking time away from one of the most challenging and competitive professions. Following her own path, though one less traveled, Attorney Salsburg hopes to inspire anyone struggling with stigma, but also appreciates her capacity to encourage attorneys of color to care for themselves.
This year, we are also doing something new. We are adding a silent auction and seeking sponsorships from our biggest supporters, like you. The silent auction is both a way to engage our community, filled with competitors in the law, in something fun and productive and to raise funds that will allow us to do more for lawyers in need of recovery support.
LCL is a 501(c)(3) non-profit that receives generous funding from bar dues for its operations. Nonetheless, as the recent survey by NORC from the University of Chicago showed, lawyers continue to suffer from burnout and hazardous drinking at disturbing rates. Our current model of evaluation and referring members of the legal community to treatment providers is falling short as it has become increasingly difficult to find providers who will accept health insurance. As we explore options for dealing with this challenge and increasing resources available to lawyers who need but cannot afford more intensive recovery services, we recognize some of those options are cost prohibitive with our current funding.
Further, last year, LCL hosted the Brink Dinner, its first since the pandemic, as a gift to the legal community that supports it through dues. Hoping to defray the cost of this event while keeping it accessible to anyone in the legal community who wants to come, a perspective in keeping with our recovery roots, we are turning to donors for sponsorship.
Save the Date: September 21st at the Harvard Club in Boston from 6 pm to 9 pm.
Ways to help:
Donate items to our silent auction:
We value any donation for the silent auction. Examples of donations that tend to be in demand include tickets to a sporting event (perhaps the Firm’s luxury suite), theater, concert, membership tickets at the A.R.T. (American Repertory Theater), a vacation home available for a week, or a unique experience not mentioned. We can also build experiences that someone will consider priceless around items like these and many more. Additionally, we can build experiences with your cash donations.* Lastly, we would appreciate your spreading the word to any of your generous friends and business owners who like to give to a good cause. Please note that this is an alcohol-free event, so we ask that there are no donations of alcohol.
With the donation of any auction item, the donor will receive recognition for their donation, their name or logo at the event signage and slide show, as well as on the Brink Dinner registration page.
